On September 16, KLM officially inaugurated the flight of its brand-new Airbus A321neo, marking a significant milestone in the airline's fleet modernization process. According to a company statement, this new aircraft aligns with KLM’s efforts to offer more environmentally friendly flights, featuring quieter and more fuel-efficient planes.
KLM's first A321neo has been deployed on routes to Copenhagen, Berlin, and Stockholm since September 16. Additional destinations, including Paris Charles de Gaulle (starting October 7), Prague, and Vienna, will be added by the end of the year. The airline plans to integrate three more A321neo aircraft into its fleet by the end of the year.
KLM will receive a total of four A321neo aircraft, leased from CDB Aviation. This plane becomes the largest model in KLM’s medium-haul fleet, with a capacity of 227 passengers. In 2021, the Air France-KLM group placed an order for 100 A320neo and A321neo aircraft, with 60 additional options, intended for KLM and the low-cost carrier Transavia. This marks a strategic shift for KLM, traditionally a customer of Boeing 737s, with 42 units still in service today.
