Vietnam's national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines is to sign an initial agreement for the purchase of some 50 Boeing 737 MAX jets for $10 billion at list price, reported financial agency Bloomberg.
The transaction was finalized between the two partners during U.S. President Joe Biden's visit to Vietnam yesterday. The official announcement is expected shortly. Vietnam is one of the world's fastest-growing aviation markets. By 2022, in the post-pandemic recovery period, it was the fifth fastest-growing aviation market in the world, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA). It is expected to record up to 150 million passengers a year by 2035.
Last year, Vietnamese private carrier VietJet signed a mega-order for 200 737 MAX jets to be delivered between 2024 and 2028. It remains to be seen whether Boeing will be able to meet the delivery schedule, with the 737 MAX experiencing delays due to recurring problems in the supply chain.
