Southwest Airlines strengthens its commitment to the 737 MAX family with an order for an additional 108 Boeing 737-7s, according to a joint announcement by Boeing and the airline this week.
The new order is part of Southwest's fleet modernization strategy and provides the flexibility to expand its fleet. "Our partnership with Boeing spans more than 50 years, from our beginnings with three Boeing 737s serving three cities," noted Bob Jordan, president and CEO of Southwest Airlines. "They are an integral part of our history and our future as we continue to realize the efficiencies and cost savings of a seamless fleet."
The 737 family, a long-standing Southwest customer, has been a driving force behind the airline's continued growth. In fact, Southwest has already placed over 300 orders for the 737-7, bringing its order backlog to over 500 737 MAX jets. Once certified, the 737-7 will bolster the airline's all-Boeing 737 fleet. "With the world's largest all-Boeing 737 fleet, Southwest relies on the exceptional efficiency and reliability of the 737 MAX family," said Stan Deal, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "The 737-7 is a key component of Southwest's long-term fleet modernization strategy, and we are honored to continue to earn the airline's trust in delivering its future fleet."
The 737-7 boasts the longest range in its class, capable of flying up to 3,800 nautical miles while accommodating up to 172 passengers. The 737 MAX's improved environmental performance enables carriers to reduce fuel consumption compared with the previous generation of aircraft. It is also quieter, which means a smaller noise footprint than the older jets it replaces.
