Emirates has announced its intention to introduce the Airbus A350-900 starting in the summer of 2024. This move will enable the airline to serve medium-sized cities in Australia such as Adelaide and Darwin, which do not receive enough traffic to warrant the use of the A380 super-jumbo.
The Dubai-based airline confirms it is already in close discussions with Adelaide Airport to resume this Australian route, which was suspended in early 2020 due to the pandemic. Barry Brown, Emirates Australia's Director, stated to the local press, "The addition of non-stop flights by Emirates to Adelaide is part of our commitment to Australia to expand and enhance connectivity options for travelers. We look forward to returning to Adelaide and once again playing a key role in the international travel plans of South Australians."
Emirates plans to take delivery of its first A350-900s in mid-2024, which it says will "facilitate the expansion of the airline's global network by allowing its fleet to grow and serve more points like Adelaide." While the Emirati airline has not yet disclosed how it intends to configure its A350-900s, of which it has 50 on order, a three-class configuration (Business, Premium Economy, and Economy) is considered the most likely.
