EasyJet Plans to Order 157 New Airbus Aircraft, Including 56 A320NEO and 101 A321NEO
EasyJet has announced a proposed agreement to purchase 157 aircraft from Airbus, a transaction totaling nearly $20 billion at list prices.
By presenting this agreement to the European aircraft manufacturer, the British low-cost carrier aims to secure the delivery of these 157 aircraft - consisting of 56 A320neo and 101 A321neo - between the fiscal years 2029 and 2034. The agreement also includes an option to purchase an additional 100 aircraft. These acquisitions will "allow easyJet to modernize its fleet and grow beyond 2028 while generating significant benefits in terms of cost savings and sustainability," commented CEO Johan Lundgren.
According to a statement from the British low-cost carrier, "The group's ability to maintain its route network, retain attractive slots, and grow is dependent on the timely delivery of aircraft. Delivery slots for single-aisle aircraft of about 200 seats are very limited until at least 2029, both at Airbus and Boeing. easyJet anticipates this constraint will extend to 2030 and beyond as early as next year. By placing an order now, easyJet secures a future delivery slot allocation between fiscal years 2029 and 2034 to maintain its current size by replacing aircraft exiting the fleet, enabling easyJet to execute its disciplined growth strategy."
This purchase proposal announced by easyJet's management is still subject to approval by the airline's shareholders at a general meeting scheduled before the end of the year.
Currently, EasyJet operates 60 A320neo family single-aisle aircraft in its fleet. By the fiscal year 2029, the company is also expecting deliveries from a previous order of 158 A320neo, including 35 that have been converted to A321neo at easyJet's request.
