Croatia Airlines has taken an important step by adopting Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) for its flights for the first time. As part of its preparations to meet future EU regulatory requirements, the airline has begun using this type of fuel on its Airbus 319 and Dash 8-Q400 aircraft. The flights concerned include international routes from Zagreb to European cities such as Amsterdam, Brussels, Copenhagen, London and Zurich, as well as domestic routes such as Zagreb-Split, Zagreb-Dubrovnik-Zagreb and Zagreb-Pula-Zadar.
SAF, a blend of fossil aviation fuel and sustainable components, is produced from raw materials that meet strict sustainability criteria. This initiative comes at a crucial time, as the European Union prepares to impose, via the ReFuelEU Aviation regulation adopted in October, that from 2025 at least 2% of the aviation fuel consumed must come from sustainable sources. This percentage will gradually increase to reach 70% by 2050.
Croatia Airlines, which uses SAF supplied by the national oil and gas company INA, is thus demonstrating its commitment to participating in the decarbonization of the aviation sector. This move comes at a time when the EU is seeking to significantly reduce CO2 emissions and promote renewable energies in all transport sectors.
In addition to its commitment to SAF, Croatia Airlines continues to modernize its fleet, currently boasting 12 aircraft, including 4 A319s, 2 A320s, and 6 Dash8-Q400s, with additional orders for 3 A220-100s and 12 A220-300s pending. The modernization also reflects the company's commitment to offering greener, more efficient travel options to its passengers.
