Alaska Airlines Invests in JetZero to Develop Revolutionary Mixed-Wing Aircraft
Alaska Airlines has announced a strategic investment in JetZero, a company pioneering the development of a new blended-wing aircraft (BWB) designed to reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions by up to 50%. This commitment reflects Alaska Airlines' goal of promoting innovative technologies for a more sustainable future in aviation, including achieving a net zero carbon footprint by 2040.
Alaska Airlines, through its investment arm Alaska Star Ventures (ASV), is the first airline to invest in JetZero, with options for future aircraft orders. This initiative is part of Alaska Airlines' overall sustainability strategy, which also includes efforts in operational efficiency, fleet renewal, sustainable aviation fuels, waste reduction, and the integration of electrified aircraft.
JetZero's BWB, which integrates the wings and fuselage into a single shape, promises a significant reduction in aerodynamic drag, leading to a marked reduction in fuel consumption and emissions. In addition to its environmental benefits, the aircraft is designed to offer an enhanced passenger experience, with a spacious interior and reduced noise levels.
According to Tom O'Leary, CEO and co-founder of JetZero, the BWB design represents one of the most promising advances for reducing costs and emissions in aviation. Working closely with the U.S. Air Force, NASA and the FAA, JetZero is well on its way to commercializing this revolutionary technology.
Diana Birkett Rakow, Senior Vice President of Public Affairs and Sustainability at Alaska Airlines, expressed the company's pride in partnering with JetZero to shape a more sustainable future in air travel, emphasizing the importance of this collaboration in achieving the company's ambitious environmental goals.
