The year 2023 marks a remarkable milestone in the history of air transport, becoming the year with the highest safety rate according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA). With an exceptional rate of one incident for every 1.26 million flights, the aviation sector demonstrates its ongoing commitment to safety and improved operational performance.
This progress is all the more significant given the 17% increase in flight volume over the previous year, underlining the effectiveness of safety measures implemented worldwide. IATA highlights the robustness of these safety systems, indicating that a person would theoretically have to travel every day for over 103,000 years to be involved in an incident.
IATA's report also reveals an overall improvement in safety across different regions of the world, with a special mention for Africa, where significant efforts have been made to maintain a positive record since 2020. Europe continues to present an excellent safety record, with a particular focus on preventing minor incidents.
The year 2023 saw the entry into service of 38 new routes by airBaltic, expanding its network to 126 routes and affirming its role as a connector between the Baltic countries and the world. The fleet expansion with the addition of the Airbus A220-300, of which airBaltic is the world's largest operator, reinforces this ambition.
As part of its future vision, IATA envisages continued growth in passenger numbers, anticipating 4.7 billion passengers by 2024. This development promises to keep the focus on safety, demonstrating the industry's commitment to offering a safe and enjoyable flying experience on an ever-increasing scale.
With a positive outlook, the air transport sector continues to prove its resilience and dedication to constantly improving air safety, ensuring the confidence and serenity of travellers across the globe.
