Lufthansa City Airlines, the new entity of the Lufthansa Group, is set to launch flight operations on June 26, 2024, with the inauguration of its first flight from Munich to Birmingham. From April 24, 2024, customers will be able to book tickets, including direct flights from Munich to several key destinations, under the new airline code "VL".
The airline will be fully integrated into Lufthansa's Frankfurt and Munich hub network, initiating operations with flights to German and European domestic destinations such as Hanover, Düsseldorf, and notably Birmingham. Lufthansa City Airlines has also announced the addition of nine new European destinations this summer, including Bordeaux.
The initial fleet will comprise aircraft from the Airbus A320 family, and Lufthansa has invested in the airline's future by ordering 40 new, fuel-efficient Airbus A220-300s, with an option for a further 20 aircraft. These new aircraft will support the airline's growth, enabling it to gradually expand its European network.
Jens Fehlinger, Chief Operating Officer of Lufthansa City Airlines, said: "Lufthansa City Airlines contributes to the future viability of the Munich and Frankfurt hubs. We look forward to deliveries of new, modern Airbus A220 and A320neo aircraft in the coming years. For the benefit of our customers and employees, we are continuing with our renewal and thus strengthening Lufthansa's planned growth in long-haul traffic."
Lufthansa City Airlines passengers will benefit from Lufthansa's well-established product and service offering for short- and medium-haul routes, guaranteeing a consistent, quality travel experience.
