IndiGo, India's leading low-cost airline, took a major step forward last Thursday with the announcement of a firm order for 30 Airbus A350-900s. These aircraft, powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines, represent the airline's first foray into the wide-body segment, marking a strategic turning point in its expansion.

With this acquisition, IndiGo is responding to the growing demand of its constantly evolving market. The company explained that this fleet expansion aims to enhance its offering on long-haul routes, exploring new avenues to meet the needs of Indian travellers and support the government's vision of making India a world aviation leader by 2030.

In addition to the firm order for 30 units, IndiGo has also secured purchase rights for a further 70 A350-900s, illustrating the airline's ambition to strengthen its presence on international routes. These new acquisitions add to an already impressive order book, with almost 1,000 A320 Family aircraft, including A320neo, A321neo, and A321XLR, to be delivered over the next decade.

Pieter Elbers, CEO of IndiGo, expressed his enthusiasm for this new phase: "The fleet of 30 Airbus A350-900s will enable IndiGo to embark on its next phase to become one of the world's leading aviation players." This expansion reflects not only IndiGo's commitment to operational excellence, but also its desire to contribute to the government's mission to establish state-of-the-art infrastructure and position India as a major aviation hub.

Deliveries of the Airbus A350-900s are scheduled to commence from 2027, marking a new chapter for IndiGo as it continues to position itself as a leader in the fast-growing aviation sector.
