American Airlines Poised for Major Order Split Between Airbus and Boeing
American Airlines is on the verge of finalizing a significant order for a hundred single-aisle aircraft split between Airbus and Boeing, according to Reuters citing sources familiar with the negotiations. The order is expected to include Airbus A321neo as well as Boeing 737 MAX-8, with an official announcement anticipated at an upcoming shareholder meeting. The final composition of the order remains under deliberation, particularly due to uncertainties surrounding Boeing's 737 MAX-10, which is facing certification delays.
American Airlines is considering this major purchase amidst a rush for the limited production slots at Airbus, potentially leading to a slight preference for Airbus over its American rival, Boeing. This situation emerges as United Airlines, another major airline, engages in discussions with Airbus for a possible new order to replace the hundreds of 737 MAX-10s previously ordered from Boeing, whose deliveries have been postponed to an undefined future date.
Devon May, CFO of American Airlines, confirmed last month that the airline was in discussions with Boeing, Airbus, and even Embraer for a new order, noting that Boeing's current issues were being factored into their order analysis.
