Wizz Air yesterday signed a firm contract for a further 75 Airbus A321neo aircraft, bringing its total order with the European aircraft manufacturer to 434 single-aisle aircraft.
The contract is worth around ten billion dollars, based on the 2018 catalogue price, the latest to be released by Airbus. The Hungarian low-cost carrier currently operates a 100% Airbus fleet of more than 180 A320 family aircraft.
Launched 20 years ago, Wizz Air was Europe's sixth-largest airline in terms of the number of daily flights at the end of July, behind Air France but ahead of KLM, according to traffic watchdog Eurocontrol. It is engaged in an ambitious race for passenger volumes and, along with its direct Irish competitor Ryanair, is one of the big winners of the post-Covid-19 recovery, with 141% of the traffic for the same period in 2019, with Ryanair at 127%.
"Wizz Air is further strengthening its position as the largest operator of the A321neo family in Europe and the Middle East. More than half of our fleet has already been converted to the state-of-the-art neo technology. The unrivalled cost-effectiveness and remarkably low carbon footprint of the A321neo underpins our commitment to providing affordable and sustainable travel options for our customers. We enjoy a long-standing strategic partnership with Airbus and are unwavering in our commitment to this exceptional technology with one of the world's largest backlogs of more than 350 aircraft.
The A321neo is the largest member of the A320neo family, offering unrivalled range and performance, Airbus points out in a press release. By incorporating new-generation engines and Sharklets, the A321neo delivers a 50% reduction in noise and more than 20% fuel and CO2 savings compared with previous-generation single-aisle aircraft, while maximising passenger comfort in the widest single-aisle cabin in the sky. To date, nearly 5,200 A321neo aircraft have been ordered by customers around the world.
