Low cost airline Ryanair has placed a firm order for 150 Boeing 737 MAX 10s, plus 150 options, for delivery between 2027 and 2033.

Rumours underestimated the size of the contract announced on 9 May 2023, which with an estimated value of $40 billion is the largest in the history of the Irish low-cost specialist. Boeing and Ryanair announced that it has chosen "the largest 737 MAX model to fuel future growth" as the airline deploys "a growing fleet of 737-8-200 aircraft to accelerate its recovery from the pandemic and meet strong travel demand". The new order adds the larger 737-10 variant, which offers Ryanair 228 seats "and the best unit economics of any single-aisle aeroplane," Boeing said, adding that the order will be published on Boeing's Orders and Deliveries website "once finalized.

"Ryanair is pleased to sign this record-breaking order for 300 MAX 10s with our partner Boeing. These new fuel-efficient and greener aircraft offer 21% more seats, use 20% less fuel and are 50% quieter than our 737NGs," Michael O'Leary, group CEO of Ryanair Holdings, said in a statement.

"We expect half of this order to replace older NGs, while the remaining 150 aircraft will facilitate controlled and sustainable growth to just over 300 million guests per year by 2034," he added. "This order, together with the other Gamechanger deliveries, will create 10,000 new jobs for highly paid aviation professionals over the next decade, and these jobs will be generated in all the major European economies where Ryanair is currently the number one or number two airline."

"In addition to providing significant revenue and market growth opportunities across Europe, we expect these new, larger and more efficient aircraft to generate further unit cost savings, which will be passed on to passengers in the form of lower airfares. The additional seats, lower fuel burn and more competitive pricing of the aircraft, supported by our strong balance sheet, will widen the cost gap between Ryanair and competing European airlines for many years to come, making the Boeing MAX 10 the ideal growth aircraft order for Ryanair, our passengers, staff and shareholders," concluded the Ryanair executive.
