India's largest low-cost airline, IndiGo, could be on the verge of placing its first widebody order, with the Airbus A350 emerging as the carrier's most likely candidate. According to Bloomberg, which spoke to sources close to the airline, IndiGo is still considering its options, but an order for 30 Airbus A350s seems the likely outcome.
The source told Bloomberg that nothing had yet been decided, although an announcement concerning an order for wide-body jets could be made within a few weeks. IndiGo operates on international routes, but with destinations generally limited to the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Although the majority of IndiGo's fleet is made up of narrow-body aircraft, the carrier operates two wide-body Boeing 777s belonging to Turkish Airlines to Istanbul.
With a fleet of 30 Airbus A350s at its disposal, IndiGo could compete with Air India on long-haul routes to destinations in the USA and Europe. In 2023, IndiGo placed the biggest order in its history with an agreement with Airbus for 500 aircraft, including 125 A320neo and 375 A321neo. This was in addition to a previous order with Airbus for 480 aircraft. In August 2023, there had been similar speculation about an IndiGo wide-body order for 25 new aircraft from the Boeing family.
