The Government of Canada has awarded Airbus Defence and Space a contract for four new Airbus A330 Multi-Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft and the conversion of five pre-owned A330-200 aircraft to enhance Canada's continental defence capabilities. Contract value: €2.1 billion (before tax).
Known as the Strategic Airlift and Refuelling Vehicle (SLARV) Project, this new fleet of aircraft will replace the ageing CC-150 Polaris (A310 MRTT) and will be operated by the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). The current fleet of A310 aircraft is used for air-to-air refuelling, airlift of military personnel and cargo, medical evacuation and strategic transport of Canadian government officials.
The newly built A330-200 aircraft will be assembled on the A330 final assembly line in Toulouse. Conversion of these aircraft at the A330 MRTT facility in Getafe, Spain, is scheduled for mid-2025, with the first MRTT delivered to the RCAF in 2027.
The contract covers a full range of training services, including solutions such as the full-flight simulator, to prepare and maintain qualified aircrews as part of the modernization of the Canadian Forces air operations training infrastructure.
Following an open procurement process in April 2021, Airbus was selected as the sole qualified supplier for the CC-150 tanker replacement.
